Common questions and curriculum frameworks for the AP® Calculus scholar program.

THE AB vs BC ANALYSIS

What's the difference between AB and BC?

Calculus AB is an introductory college-level course exploring differential and integral calculus. Calculus BC encompasses the entire AB framework but adds two additional units and advanced techniques.

Course Component AP Calculus AB AP/BC Calculus
Units 1–8 (Limits, Derivatives, Integrals)✅ YES✅ YES
Advanced Integration Techniques (Unit 6+)❌ BASE ONLY✅ ADVANCED
Parametric, Polar & Vector Functions (Unit 9)❌ NO✅ YES
Infinite Sequences & Series (Unit 10)❌ NO✅ YES

Take BC Course, Take AB Exam?

If you take the BC Course, you can still take the AB Exam. However, the BC Exam includes an **AB subscore**, which is equivalent to taking the AB Exam independently. Most students find the BC subscore sufficient for college credit.
PEDAGOGY & RIGOUR

The Importance of AP® Calculus

Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP, notes that Admission Offices value the rigor of Calculus highly. Statistics show that AP students—even those scoring 1s and 2s—demonstrate calculus knowledge comparable to the highest achieving students in the world.

Audit and Approval

Our course strictly adheres to the College Board curriculum and has been audited for standard compliance. You can find our listing on the Ledger by entering ‘ChemAdvantage’ or the instructor’s name in the Quick Search line.

Practice for the AP Exam

During our intensive year-end review, students take multiple-choice (MC) and free-response (FRQ) exams released by the College Board exclusively to audited teachers. This ensures complete parity with real testing conditions.

Letters of Recommendation

My commitment to students does not end with the exam. I keep detailed records of my students’ accomplishments during the year to provide specific, high-end recommendations for university admissions.
ELIGIBILITY & ACCESS

Who is eligible for this course?

The course is open to students in Grade 9–12 (Ages 14–18). While the College Board enables studies for younger students, we follow the recommendation of age 14+ to prevent a ‘math gap’ before college enrollment.

Prerequisites

A strong foundation in Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Elementary Functions is required. Pre-Calculus is helpful but not mandatory; approximately 20% of our successful students skip it.

Homeschool & Brick-and-Mortar Students

All scholars are welcome. Approximately 80% of our community consists of full-time homeschoolers, while 20% join us from private or public brick-and-mortar schools as external enrichment.
FORMAT & LOGISTICS

Is the course Asynchronous or Synchronous?

The course is Asynchronous—materials are available 24/7 to accommodate all time zones. However, we host optional live sessions for Q&A which are recorded for those who cannot attend.

Summer Courses and Pace

We do not offer a summer course. AP®/BC Calculus covers two semesters of college material in 10 months; even for the brightest students, this rigor requires 36 weeks to master fully.

Required Resources

Students should only use our updated materials, as external books are often outdated. Each year we update content to match precise College Board changes (such as the removal of ‘Big Ideas’).
ADMISSION INSIGHT

“Within the 20% of admission offices that value some AP subjects over others: #1: Calc AB; #2: Calc BC.
